At Hooked Martial Arts, we always focus on making smart choices, whether we're on the mats training or off the mats making decisions about what we eat. Lately, in class, we’ve been talking about the importance of choosing healthy foods, and I wanted to share some of these ideas with you and your family.
What Makes a Food "Healthy"?
A good rule to remember is that healthy foods usually come from natural sources. Think about things that grow in the ground, like fruits and vegetables, or foods that come from animals, like lean meats, eggs, and dairy. These are foods that give our bodies the energy and nutrients we need to perform well in training and to feel great all day long.
When we eat foods that are close to how they exist in nature, our bodies know exactly what to do with them. For example, an apple is packed with fiber, vitamins, and natural sugars that our body can use for energy. Similarly, whole grains like brown rice or oats give us long-lasting fuel without the harmful additives.
Processed Foods and Why We Should Avoid Them
On the other hand, processed foods are often less healthy. Processed foods are any foods that have been changed in some way, whether it’s adding preservatives, extra sugar, or artificial ingredients to make them last longer or taste a certain way.
Have you ever noticed that the foods in the store with the brightest, most colorful packages tend to be things like chips, candy, or sugary cereals? They often have cartoons on the packaging and come with bright colors and fun designs to catch your eye. While they might seem exciting or tasty, most of these foods are loaded with unhealthy ingredients that our bodies don’t need.
Processed foods are often packed with extra sugar, unhealthy fats, and salt. These ingredients make the food taste good, but they don’t do much to help our bodies grow stronger or recover from a hard workout. In fact, eating too many processed foods can make us feel sluggish or tired.
How to Make Better Choices
Next time you’re choosing a snack, here’s an easy way to think about it: if the food comes in a bright package with lots of extra ingredients you can’t pronounce, it’s probably processed. But if it looks like something that came straight from nature, like an apple, a carrot, or a piece of grilled chicken, you’re making a healthy choice.
A few simple swaps can make a big difference:
- Instead of a sugary cereal, try oatmeal with fruit.
- Instead of chips, try some air-popped popcorn or sliced veggies with hummus.
- Instead of soda or sports drinks, stick with water or milk.
By making small changes like these, you’ll have more energy, feel better, and perform your best during martial arts training!
Remember, the food we put into our bodies is just as important as the work we do in the dojo. So, next time you’re choosing what to eat, think about whether it’s a food that will fuel your body and keep you healthy!
